How Our Helpline Is Changing Lives, One Call at a Time

Sometimes the hardest part of a difficult situation isn’t the situation itself. It’s not knowing who to turn to.

That’s the gap our helpline exists to fill.

A Simple Idea, With a Real Impact

The idea behind our helpline is straightforward: give people somewhere to turn when they’re worried, confused, or simply exhausted, and no one else around them fully understands what they’re going through.

For many of the families we support, it is often the very first time they’ve spoken to anyone outside their household about what’s happening. Sometimes the call starts hesitantly, a carer unsure whether what they’re describing is even worth mentioning. Often, by the end of the conversation, there’s real relief simply in having been heard.

What a Call Might Involve

There’s no fixed script for what someone might call about. It could be a daughter noticing her father repeating the same questions, unsure whether it’s a sign of something more serious. It could be a wife struggling to cope with her husband’s confusion and distress, and needing guidance on how to respond calmly. It could simply be someone who has heard the word “dementia” for the first time, and wants to understand what it means.

Whatever the reason, every call is met with patience, without judgement, and in language that makes sense to the person on the other end.

Why a Phone Call Matters So Much

In communities where literacy is limited and formal healthcare can be difficult to access, a phone call removes many of the usual barriers. There’s no form to fill in, no leaflet to read, no appointment to arrange weeks in advance. Just a conversation, at the moment it’s needed most.

For carers especially, this can be transformative. Many have never had the chance to ask a question like “is this normal?” or “am I doing this right?” out loud. Simply having somewhere to ask can ease a burden that’s been carried quietly, sometimes for years.

More Than Information

Our helpline isn’t only about answering medical questions, although we’re glad to help with those too. It’s about connection. It’s about a family realising they’re not the only ones facing this. It’s about a carer hearing, clearly and without hesitation, “what you’re going through is hard, and you’re doing an important thing.”

Sometimes that reassurance is exactly what someone needs to keep going, a little more gently, for another day.
